After my meeting with Alyson and trialling installing bits indoors I needed to decide on exactly what I wanted

  • record or write list of sounds I want
  • detail what sounds for what pieces
  • sounds in tubes, screaming, whispering, music, domestic sounds
  • detail each installation and what I need – speakers, leads to go with each piece

I wanted to rehash a Hammer House of Horror that is forever etched in my memory.  For me this scene fits perfectly with this piece.  The pipes are the feature of the birthday party.  They conceal what they carry, they cause confusion, horror and fear yet they serve a domestic purpose which we do not consider daily.  The duality of this scene fits with what I wish to convey for the viewer – one of the unexpected.  What we expect and what we experience are sometimes polar opposites.

  • edit film, clips of children’s faces, happy, laughing, eating
  • sounds of creaky pipes, screaming/voices, gushing liquids

I watched the film in its entirety and compiled a list of what I wanted to keep – this is what I have used in this piece so far.  I have passed this onto Alyson and am hoping that she will create some loops for the boxes – but until then I have just edited together some sound footage.

‘Sophie’s Birthday Party’

(Speaker Boxes with pipes)

Film – Hammer House of Horror – ‘The House That Bled to Death’

  • I intend to install eight pieces that will be on the wall and the floor. They may appear to be talking to each other or ignoring each other.
  • I intend to project onto the pieces on the wall with film from the scene of the birthday party – on a loop with no sound
  • The sound I want to be emitted from the speaker boxes themselves and to travel down through the pipes.
  • With the sound pieces I would like to convey a sense of confusion, disturbances, quiet and an uncanny feeling – sounds like, creaking pipes, gushing liquid, screaming children, doors slamming, laughing, people talking mixed with the soundtrack of the film
  • Each speaker will contain its on track on a loop – time length probably a couple of minutes or less – I would like each track to vary in volume so that at times sound can only be heard from one track clearly whilst the others are quieter.
