Show two films

Presto‘ of a violinist shot on 35mm

  • to achieve perfect execution of composers violin piece – which is impossible to play
  • same frame filmed x6 times – allowed violinist to choose ‘perfect execution’
  • looking at construction of film as well as being seduced by music

Dissonance‘ – of a dancer – 16mm film

  • 40 year old dancer about to retire
  • dancer chose the piece of music – choreographed piece and looped over and over the same choreographed sequence.
  • danced from memory
  • begins with close up of her face concentrating on listening to the music – when the music stops she begins her dance
  • playing with using memory to recreate  – film reel changed x3 times – gaps in film allow viewer to access memory of what they have seen
  • sound more important than image
  • sound addresses you in a different way
  • removing image – creates something completely different ( think about when looking at my pipes)
  • faces/concentrating/obsessing
  • observation of time (film) rather than a still moment

One interesting moment that did happen was when the music stopped in the film (Dissonance) a fellow student began to play the piano!!  first bit of intervention I’ve seen since I’ve been here!!
